Senate approves Gina Haspel as CIA's first female director

The United States Senate voted on Thursday 54-45 in favor of confirming Gina Haspel as the new director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), thus making her the first woman to lead the agency established more than 70 years ago. Haspel, a 33-year veteran of the agency will replace Mike Pompeo, who served as CIA director from 2017 until he was appointed as secretary of state by President Trump last month.

Haspel's Senate confirmation was brought into question because of her involvement in the CIA torture program which was launched following the September 11 terrorist attacks. However, despite opposition from Republican senators Rand Paul and John McCain, who didn't vote because of his illness, Haspel managed to gain support of several Democratic senators which secured her confirmation.
