Senate GOP opposes govt funding bill

Republicans in the United States Senate voted against a bill that would raise the debt ceiling and keep the government funded until December. The senators voted 50-48 along party lines, with 60 votes needed to approve the measure.

Unless a funding bill is passed this week, a government shutdown will be triggered on Friday. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated the Democrats "will be taking further action" without providing details. "The Republican Party has solidified itself as the party of default, and it will be the American people who pay the price," he stated.
