Senate rejects GOP attempt to dismiss Trump impeachment trial

The United States Senate dismissed a motion proposed by Republican senators who looked to rule out the second impeachment trial against ex-US President Donald Trump. The trial will begin as planned in the week starting February 8.

A total of 55 US senators voted against Kentucky Senator Rand Paul's attempt to prevent the trial, while 45 Republican representatives in the upper chamber of the US Congress, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, voted in favor of the motion.

However, the results of the vote hinted it's highly unlikely the Democrats will be able to coax 17 Republicans to support the second impeachment against Trump that would block his potential presidential run in 2024. In order to impeach the former president, Senate Democrats would need to secure a total of 67 votes.
