Senate to look into new report on Facebook

The chairman of Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee John Thune said that his committee plans to ask Facebook for more information on the new report that the social media giant shared user data with device makers. Two Democrats on the Senate panel sent their own letter asking Facebook to explain its data-sharing practices with companies like Apple and BlackBerry.

The New York Times reported earlier that Facebook has data-sharing partnerships with at least 60 device makers. The deals, made in the last 10 years, allowed Facebook to expand its reach but at the same time allowed device makers access to vast amounts of its users' personal information.

The social media giant responded to the New York Times report saying that partner companies “signed agreements that prevented people’s Facebook information from being used for any other purpose than to recreate Facebook- like experiences.”
