IEA: Renewables will be main electricity source in 2025

The International Energy Agency (IEA) projected in its report published on Tuesday that renewables will become the world's largest source of electricity in 2025, replacing coal.

In the report titled Renewables 2022, the IEA stressed that Russia's military operation in Ukraine and the energy crisis it caused resulted in countries' efforts to reduce their dependency on fuels and turn to sources such as solar and wind. It predicted that renewables will see an expansion of 90% in the next five years and account for 40% of global electricity distribution in 2027.

"The world is set to add as much renewable power in the next five years as it did in the previous 20 years," IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol stated. "Renewables' continued acceleration is critical to help keep the door open to limiting global warming to 1.5 °C [degrees Celsius]."
