Shell CEO: Start-ups won't solve climate change

Royal Dutch Shell Chief Executive Officer Ben van Beurden (pictured) stated that "start-ups or companies that have yet to be invented" were not going to solve energy transition problems.

In an interview with Axios, Van Beurden stated that he thinks it is "insufficiently understood" that "companies like us [Shell] are absolutely needed for the solutions that the world needs," adding that if you believe otherwise "dream on." Moreover, he also added that "many governments do not want to be seen listening to us" and that "in many parts of society, everything we say is wrong," but asserted that it is "nevertheless a reality" that those types of companies need to be included in climate change talks and discussions.

Previously, Shell introduced new targets for carbon neutrality to comply with the Paris Agreement.
