Iran confirms executing first detained protester

An Iranian protester was hanged by authorities on Thursday morning after being found guilty of causing knife injuries to a security guard in Tehran and blocking a road. Local news agency Tasnim said the individual was named Mohsen Shekari, and was involved in a demonstration that led to the incident in September. Tehran confirmed that another 11 protesters had been sentenced to death.

Iran has been rocked by months of nationwide protests since the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died under suspicious circumstances after being arrested for not wearing the hijab properly.

Human rights agencies worldwide have spoken out amidst the arrests, warning that many more would be executed if the West doesn't intervene. According to Human Rights Activists' News Agency (HRANA), 475 protesters have been killed and 18,240 have been detained since the protests began in September.
