Somalia hotel siege over, 12 killed

At least 12 people were killed and over 30 injured in a bomb and gun attack carried out by Islamist rebels on a hotel in southern Somalia, media reported on Saturday.

The attack initially started on Friday when a suicide bomber rammed a vehicle full of explosives into the Hotel Asasey in the port town of Kismayu. Heavily-armed gunmen then forced their way inside and began a siege of the hotel which was only concluded earlier in the day when they were killed by security forces. Authorities said that they believed that four gunmen were involved.

Islamist organization Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for both attacks. The police said that members of the war-torn country's parliament were holding a meeting with local leaders in the hotel. The casualties included politicians, journalists and social media activists.
