State Dept: ICJ ruling on Iran assets victory for US

United States Department of State released on Wednesday a reaction statement to the ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in Certain Iranian Assets case, calling parts of it a "significant victory" for the US. The court said that Iran can proceed with its bid to reclaim $2 billion in assets which were frozen by the US as compensation for victims of terror attacks ascribed to the regime in Iran.

Deputy spokesman Robert Palladino stated that the United Nations court "significantly narrowed" the case by rejecting many of Iran’s "baseless claims."

"Iran’s goal is to prevent United States victims of the Iranian regime’s wanton acts of terrorism over decades,... from recovering compensation from Iran in U.S. courts," he noted.

Still, the State Department pointed out its disagreement with the Court allowing some of Tehran's claims to proceed. "The 1955 Treaty of Amity was never intended to provide cover for Iran’s bad acts," Palladino stressed.
