Stoltenberg calls on Taliban to cut violence

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday in Munich that the Taliban should agree to reduce violence in Afghanistan. He noted that, thereafter, NATO could agree to "adjust" the number of troops it has in the country.

Stoltenberg stated on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference: "NATO currently has around 16,000 troops in Afghanistan, and we are ready to adjust that force if the Taliban is able to demonstrate the will and the ability to reduce violence, and we see a path to peace."

Earlier, reports said that the United States agreed to a "seven-day reduction of violence" as Washington claimed to be close to a peace deal with the Taliban which want all foreign troops out of the country.
