Stoltenberg: NATO supports US-Russia dialogue

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said during a press conference in Brussels on Thursday that the alliance supports United States President Donald Trump's decision to hold talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

"We should sit down and talk to Russia," Stoltenberg noted. On Wednesday, the NATO chief called on allies not to isolate Moscow despite not recognizing Russia's "annexation of Crimea," and condemning its "propaganda, actions in cyberspace, interference in elections" and the alleged poisoning of former spy Sergey Skripal.

Meanwhile, NATO issued a statement claiming that Russia's "aggressive actions" present a threat to the security in Europe and North America, while Trump pointed out he sees Putin as a "competitor" rather than an "enemy." Russia claimed NATO's assessment of the Euro-Atlantic security is not objective and said it expects the dialogue between Putin and Trump to be "complex" as a result of the "extent of disagreements" between the two sides.
