Storm Barry upgraded to hurricane; to make landfall

The National Weather Service lifted Barry's status to level 1 hurricane on Saturday after Louisiana and Mississippi declared emergencies ahead of the storm's arrival from the Gulf of Mexico. The institution estimated it would quickly weaken to a tropical storm when it makes landfall.

The update revealed the hurricane is still moving slowly with winds of as much as 75 miles or 121 kilometers per hour as it came to within 50 miles Morgan City, Louisiana. New Orleans and its surroundings suffered greatly from flooding when Hurricane Katrina struck 14 years ago.

Authorities said more than 45,000 inhabitants in Louisiana's south had electricity outage and that several roads were under water.
