Strike threatened against Ford's closure in Wales

More than one thousand workers or 83% of present members of the staff voted on Friday to take action including the possibility of a walkout to prevent the shutdown of a car engine plant in Bridgend. Ford Motor Co. has said it would lock the gate at the end of the summer of next year, resulting in the direct loss of 1,700 positions, and blamed expenses and "changing customer demand." The automotive giant has denied Brexit was a factor behind the pullout despite concerns it expressed earlier regarding the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union.

Employees authorized Unite to fight the decision about the future of the facility. The union claimed the manufacturer is committing "unprecedented industrial sabotage" and told it to come up with an alternative. "The company must also acknowledge the overwhelming anger expressed by the Welsh public and from politicians from across the political spectrum... Ford must take stock of the feelings of its loyal workforce and think again. Unite’s objective is to save this plant and secure the maximum amount of Ford jobs for future generations," regional secretary Peter Hughes said.
