Sturgeon calls for 2nd Scottish indyref by 2021

Scottish National Party (SNP) leader and First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon stated on Wednesday that a second Scottish independence referendum should take place by 2021 in case the United Kingdom exits the European Union.

Sturgeon, speaking at Scotland's parliament Holyrood, stated that she plans to introduce a bill by the end of 2019 that will call for a second referendum.

Scotland held an independence referendum in 2014 when 55.3% of the voters chose to stay in the UK. A total of 44.7% voted to leave. However, one of the biggest arguments for staying in the UK at the time was remaining in the EU, so after Scotland voted against Brexit in 2016, SNP renewed calls for a new vote on Scotland's independence.
