Swedish parliament votes in favor of joining NATO
The Swedish parliament voted on Wednesday in favor of joining NATO with a broad majority, making a major shift away from the country's non-alignment defense policy. As many as 269 legislators in the Riksdag voted in favor of the resolution, while 37 voted against it.
Sweden applied to join the western military alliance together with Finland in May last year, months after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. However, Sweden's bid was halted by NATO members Hungary and Turkey, who continue to oppose it until all bilateral issues between the countries are solved.
