Switzerland tightens COVID-19 measures

The Swiss government announced new coronavirus-related restriction measures on Friday, effectively introducing mask-wearing requirements as well as vaccination certificates.

Under the new rules that are expected to last until January 24, citizens will have to wear protective masks in all indoor venues, while only those who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 or recovered from the disease will be allowed to attend mass events.

"The Federal Council currently assesses the situation as very critical. The emergence of the Omicron variant also poses new challenges for the pandemic response," the government noted in an official statement. Switzerland has detected at least three cases of the newly registered Omicron coronavirus variant so far.
