Takaichi secures support to run for Japan PM post - report
Sanae Takaichi (pictured) has secured enough votes within the Liberal Democratic Party to join the race to succeed Japan's outgoing Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, NHK reported on Sunday.
Takaichi is currently serving in the country's House of Representatives, representing Nara's second district. Her previous positions in the government include Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications from 2014 to 2017 and then again from 2019 to 2020.
Earlier this week, Suga announced he will resign from his position as early as this month. Later on, former Defence Minister Shigeru Ishiba said he is ready to replace him as the new prime minister.
