Taliban made ceasefire offer to US envoy - report

The Taliban gave the United States envoy Zalmay Khalilzad (pictured) a document containing a temporary ceasefire offer. according to a Straits Times' Thursday report. The media outlet added that the offer implied a ceasefire lasting between seven to 10 days.

Taliban officials familiar with the negotiations noted that this offer could be seen as the start of a potential peace deal that would enable the US to pull its troops out of Afghanistan. If accepted, this would mark an end to the 18-year war.

Despite Khalilzad's pushing for a peace agreement, the group last month issued a statement revealing it "has no ceasefire plans" whatsoever.
