TikTok to stop paid political content ahead of midterms

TikTok is working on banning paid political posts on its platform ahead of the United States midterm elections scheduled for November this year, the head of the company's safety in the United States Eric Han said on Wednesday.

Since paid political ads have been banned on TikTok ever since 2019, there is now a possibility of promoting certain content on the platform by paying independent creators to do so, which is exactly what the company wants to prevent at the moment. According to Han, the Chinese-owned company will work on detecting early signs of cooperation with creators as this was an issue in 2020 with the US presidential election and will stop them.

Similar actions will be undertaken by Meta, which will stop paid political content a week before midterms, while Twitter will, among other things, place a label in case it comes across misleading information on its platform.
