Tlaib cancels Israel visit, drawing ire from Trump

United States Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib refused to go to Israel under the country's "oppressive conditions" after being granted permission to visit her grandmother in the West Bank. "Silencing me with treatment to make me feel less-then is not what she wants from me - it would kill a piece of me that always stands up against racism and injustice," the Michigan representative said in a statement detailing her decision not to proceed with the planned visit.

US President Donald Trump was quick to react to Tlaib's decision, lashing out at her on Twitter and wondering could the whole situation have been a "setup." "Permission was quickly granted, whereupon Tlaib obnoxiously turned the approval down," the president wrote, commending Israel for acting "appropriately."

The Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to prevent Tlaib and her colleague Ilhan Omar from entering Israel was based on the law from 2017 that bans foreign activists who support the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) and congresswomen's open protest against Israel's policy toward Palestinians.
