Tokyo's consumer deflation shrinks to 0.3% in February

Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the Ku-area of Tokyo increased in February, surprising investors' expectations despite contracting by 0.3% over the year to stand at 101.5, the Statistics Bureau of Japan's preliminary report showed.

The headline figure went up by 0.1% compared to the previous month, when the CPI calculated for the nation's capital marked a 0.5% contraction year-on-year. Meanwhile, the index for all goods declined by 0.8% from February last year, as the prices of services went 0.1% up.

The CPI excluding fresh food and energy added 0.2% on a yearly basis but remained unchanged month-on-month, while the index excluding only fresh food decreased by 0.3% compared to last year's data, also remaining unmoved compared to the figure seen in January.
