Trudeau: China arbitrarily sentenced Canadian to death

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned China's decision to sentence a Canadian citizen to death on drug smuggling allegations. Trudeau claimed Beijing "arbitrarily" gave Robert Schellenberg a death penalty and expressed "extreme concern" over the decision.

Earlier, Chinese media said that Schellenberg was initially sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2016 but was given a retrial amid increasing tensions between Beijing and Ottawa following the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in Canada last month. After Meng's detention, China arrested 13 Canadian citizens, including former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor, who were accused of harming the country's national security.
