Trudeau: Good NAFTA deal on the table

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday that "a good North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) deal is on the table." Speaking at New York University, he said the deal signed by Canada, the United States and Mexico is "incredibly positive" for all three nations and that his country will "keep engaging" until the overhaul of the agreement is finished.

Trudeau did not specify a deadline for the deal or say whether it can be reached this year. May 17 was the deadline set by US House Speaker Paul Ryan in order for the agreement to be voted on in Congress before the end of the year. The prime minister singled out the sunset clause as a "sticking point," with the US proposing a five-year expiration date for NAFTA, as "most companies have investment timelines beyond five years." Trudeau added proposals made by Mexico in the negotiations will reduce the US trade deficit.
