Trump, Abe agree to pressure N. Korea until denuclearization

United States President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe talked over the phone late on Thursday and discussed the denuclearization of North Korea, as well as the outcome of the US midterms, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders stated on Friday.

According to the press secretary, Abe congratulated the US president on his "hard-fought, midterm elections victories" after Trump's Republican Party managed to keep the majority in the Senate, but lost control of the House of Representatives for the first time since 2010.

The two leaders also agreed on the "importance of maintaining pressure" on Pyongyang until complete denuclearization, Sanders stressed. Earlier this week, Washington and Pyongyang postponed a planned meeting between US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and North Korea's Vice Chairman Kim Yong-chol, but South Korea noted the delay is not related to the momentum of the denuclearization negotiations and added that the North and the US are looking to find a new date for the talks.
