Trump: China is 'eating tariffs', needs deal more than US

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, United States President Donald Trump downplayed the effects of tariffs imposed on Chinese goods, saying that the world's most populous nation is bearing the majority of costs incurred by levies.

"The tariffs have cost us nothing, or very little, in my opinion," the president noted, adding that "China is eating the tariffs." "They definitely want to make a deal," he pointed out, adding that he is the one who's not ready to seal the accord. Trump underlined that in order to get the deal done, he would like to see Beijing deal with the situation in Hong Kong in a "humanitarian fashion," adding that he believes his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping "has the ability to do so if he wants to."

He stated that China "needs a deal" more than the US, adding that "companies are leaving" China due to its "poor" economic performance caused by his policy. He said he believes this to be the reason Beijing wants to come to the negotiating table, apart from the fact that president Xi is fond of him.
