Trump confirms he won't meet Xi before March 1

United States President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday that he won't be meeting his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping before the trade truce between the US and China expires on March 1, but said that the meeting might be staged at some later point. Trump thus confirmed an earlier report which claimed that the meeting between the two presidents will be postponed in order for Trump to focus on his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un scheduled for February 27-28 in Vietnam.

Trump said last week that a trade deal that will end the months-long trade spat between the US and China will not be reached before he and his "friend" Xi personally resolve "long-standing and more difficult points." Later the same day, Trump said that he will meet with Xi "once or twice" before the trade agreement is concluded, but the White House subsequently stated that tariffs on Chinese goods will be increased if the two countries do not reach a deal by March 1.
