Trump: May's Brexit plan will 'probably kill the deal' with US

United States President Donald Trump said United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit plan could jeopardize a future trade agreement with the US. "If they do a deal like that, we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the UK, so it will probably kill the deal. If they do that, their trade deal with the US will probably not be made, because we have enough difficulty with the European Union," Trump said in an interview with British tabloid The Sun.

The president revealed that he "told Theresa May how to do it, but she didn't agree... she probably went the opposite way," adding that he would "absolutely" be prepared to walk away from a deal if he couldn't get the right conditions in such a negotiation. He also said May's Brexit strategy is "a much different deal than the people voted on." Commenting on the resignation of British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, Trump stated he was "very surprised and saddened" by the news, and that Johnson "would be a great Prime Minister" because "he's got what it takes and he has got the right attitude."
