Trump nominated for Nobel Peace Prize in Norway

Two Norwegian parliamentarians belonging to the country's ruling Progress Party have nominated United States President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, local media reported on Wednesday. The two lawmakers, whose political views gravitate more to the right compared to their party's official ideology, believe the US president deserves the prize for his breakthrough in resolving the North Korean nuclear arms crisis by holding a historic summit with the isolated country's leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore on Tuesday.

"What’s going on now is historic...A process is underway to ensure world peace in the future. It’s a fragile process, but we must, of course, do what we can to help this process bring good results," member of the Progress Party Per-Willy Amundsen told national state broadcaster NRK.

Since the deadline for this year's award passed in January, Trump would be eligible for the prize in 2019. This year, a record number of 330 people were nominated. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which votes on the winner, is appointed by the country's parliament.
