Trump ready to help Japan, S. Korea resolve dispute

United States President Donald Trump said on Friday he is willing to help Japan and South Korea resolve their ongoing trade dispute if they need his assistance.

"It’s like a full-time job getting involved between Japan and South Korea," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. "If they need me, I’m there," he added.

Earlier this month, Japan introduced restrictions on exports of certain chemicals used in the production of smartphone displays and chips to South Korea in response to Seoul's decision to request from Japanese companies to compensate Koreans for forced wartime labor. South Korea urged Tokyo to lift the controls and the US already offered to act as a mediator in the talks between the two Asian countries. However, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono insisted the country will do what is "necessary" to protect its firms.
