Trump slams Macron over EU army remarks

United States President Donald Trump criticized French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday for saying earlier this week that the European Union should have its own real military and become more self-reliant in defense. Trump found Macron's remarks "very insulting" suggesting that Europe needs to pay its "fair share" in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) first.

"President Macron of France has just suggested that Europe build its own military in order to protect itself from the U.S., China and Russia. Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of NATO, which the U.S. subsidizes greatly!," Trump tweeted.

President Trump arrived in Paris on Friday evening ahead of the commemoration of the Armistice Day where he is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two officials are set to determine dates of a future bilateral summit during the talks.
