Trump thanks Abe for efforts to ease Iran tensions

United States President Donald Trump thanked Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in a phone call on Friday for his efforts to bridge the communication gap between the US and Iran during his visit to the country this week, the White House said.

The two leaders also talked about the Gulf of Oman oil tanker attack incident and Abe's trip to Tehran. They also touched upon bilateral trade ahead of the G20 Summit that will take place in Osaka in two weeks.

During his trip to Iran, Abe concluded Tehran does not plan on developing nuclear weapons and urged the country to help achieve peace and stability in the region. However, after the incident in the Gulf of Oman that the US blames Iran for, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Iran had "insulted" Japan with the oil tanker attacks since one of the tankers was Japanese.
