Trump thanks Erdogan for helping in release of pastor Brunson

United States President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Saturday to thank his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan for helping with the release of the American pastor Andrew Brunson (pictured) who was detained in Turkey in relation to the failed coup attempt of July 2016. Brunson was sentenced yesterday to three years and one and a half months in prison, but the Turkish court allowed Brunson to go free, as it lifted the travel ban and house arrest on the grounds of time already served. Trump also announced that he will host the newly-freed pastor at the White House Oval Office later this afternoon.

"Pastor Andrew Brunson, released by Turkey, will be with me in the Oval Office at 2:30 P.M. (this afternoon). It will be wonderful to see and meet him. He is a great Christian who has been through such a tough experience. I would like to thank President @RT_Erdogan for his help!" Trump wrote.

In a separate tweet, Trump stressed that he made no deal with Turkey for the release and return of Brunson because he doesn't "make deals for hostages." Still, he noted there was "great appreciation on behalf of the United States, which will lead to good, perhaps great, relations between the United States & Turkey!"
