Trump to veto amended Defense Authorization Act

United States President Donald Trump took to Twitter to announce he plans to veto the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), specifying the annual budget and expenditures of the US Department of Defense, if it contains certain amendments calling for the renaming of US military bases.

"I will Veto the Defense Authorization Bill if the Elizabeth “Pocahontas” Warren (of all people!) Amendment, which will lead to the renaming (plus other bad things!) of Fort Bragg, Fort Robert E. Lee, and many other Military Bases from which we won Two World Wars, is in the Bill," Trump wrote.

The demand for removing Confederate-era symbols comes amid turmoil in the country with regards to racial minority issues, which ensued after a series of protests over the death of George Floyd spread across the nation. Trump has previously opposed any attempts at "ripping down" monuments of US history, saying the American past has to be remembered.
