Trump: US getting close to monumental deal with China

United States President Donald Trump stated on Friday that Washington and Beijing are getting very close a to "very historic monumental" trade deal. During a meeting at the White House with Peter Pellegrini, the prime minister of Slovakia, Trump noted that the negotiations with China are going "fine." The president also said that he still has come to a final decision on punitive measures on car imports from the European Union.

The next round of trade talks with China is set to take place next week in Washington after the last round ended in Beijing earlier this week. Recent reports indicated that a trade agreement could be possible by next Friday and that it would include an arrangement on how the US government would withdraw some of the punitive measures imposed on over $250 billion worth of imports from China. Additionally, Chinese President Xi Jinping is planning a visit to the US next month, further speculating that a trade deal between the world's two largest economies is possible soon.

Meanwhile, as President Trump held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the two had a discussion about a potential nuclear arrangement that could also include China, according to White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.
