Trump: Will have a meeting with Xi at G20

United States President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he will have an "extended" meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at next week's G20 summit in Japan. Trump said that the decision to hold the meeting comes following a telephone conversation with the Chinese president. Meanwhile, the trade delegations of the two countries will begin preliminary talks prior to the meeting between their leaders, Trump added.

"Had a very good telephone conversation with President Xi of China. We will be having an extended meeting next week at the G-20 in Japan. Our respective teams will begin talks prior to our meeting," Trump tweeted.

The announced meeting between Trump and Xi comes amid a period of increased trade tensions between their respective countries, marked by the exchange of tariffs on each other's imports. In the past months, the US and China have been engaged in negotiations on a deal that would resolve their trade dispute, but a final agreement has been elusive so far. Last week, Trump threatened to put tariffs on $325 billion of Chinese goods unless the two largest economies in the world reach a trade deal.
