Trump's campaign sues NYT for libel

The United States President Donald Trump's presidential campaign sued The New York Times (NYT) for libel over its article released in 2019 that claimed that there were links between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin before 2016 US presidential election.

"Today the President's re-election campaign filed suit against the New York Times for falsely stating the campaign had an 'overarching deal' with 'Vladimir Putin's oligarchy' to 'help the campaign against Hillary Clinton' in exchange for 'a new pro-Russian foreign policy, starting with relief from ... economic sanctions'," campaign's Senior Legal Adviser Jenna Ellis wrote in a statement on Wednesday.

Ellis asserted that the newspaper was "aware of the falsity" of the allegations that it nevertheless decided to publish, aiming to damage Trump's presidential candidacy.
