Turkey to pick sides in Syria according to its interests - official

Turkey will choose partners to cooperate with regarding the Syrian crisis in line with its national interests, Ankara's Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag (pictured) stated on Monday. Bozdag's comment comes as a response to French President Emmanuel Macron's earlier statement in which he claimed this weekend's US-led airstrikes divided Russia and Turkey in their policy towards Syria.

"Our policy serves the right cause. We choose the countries with which we intend to cooperate based on this – we will cooperate with those who are on the side of truth. If this serves the interests of our policy on Syria, we will take joint actions both with the United States, and with Russia and Iran," Bozdag told Turkish television.

On Saturday, the US, UK and France carried out a military operation against the regime in Damascus, launching over 100 missiles in response to Syria's alleged use of chemical weapons in Douma earlier this month. Syria's main backers Russia and Iran condemned the attack, while China questioned the legality of the intervention and called for talks. However, despite cooperating with Moscow and Tehran on finding a peace solution for the Syrian war, Turkey described the operation as "appropriate," while its Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Bashar al-Assad should no longer be the country's president.
