Twelve Russians indicted over DNC hack

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said on Friday that special counsel Robert Mueller (pictured) charged 12 Russian intelligence officers for breaching into the computers of the Democratic National Committee. The incident occurred during the 2016 presidential election campaign, where the organization worked for Hillary Clinton. Emails from its servers were published in order to influence voters, while the accused also penetrated into state boards, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee as well as software companies, investigators claim.

A federal grand jury indicted 11 of the defendants with conspiracy to commit computer crimes, while there are eight counts of aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to launder money. Two are held responsible with a conspiracy to commit computer crimes, Mueller's team revealed. United States President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Russia's President Vladimir Putin in Finland next week.

The defendants belong to Russia's military Main Intelligence Directorate, or GRU, according to the document, which accuses them of spying on "dozens of employees."
