Twitter bans all political advertising

Twitter Inc. CEO Jack Dorsey announced on Wednesday that the social media platform is banning all polical advertising.

"We’ve made the decision to stop all political advertising on Twitter globally. We believe political message reach should be earned, not bought," Dorsey said in a tweet. "A political message earns reach when people decide to follow an account or retweet. Paying for reach removes that decision, forcing highly optimized and targeted political messages on people. We believe this decision should not be compromised by money," he added. Dorsey added the final policy will be unveiled on November 15 and will take effect a week later. He stressed there will be some exceptions such as ads in support of voter registration.

"This isn’t about free expression. This is about paying for reach," Dorsey concluded.

Earlier, Facebook announced its decision to allow political advertising in the run-up to the 2020 United States presidential election and stressed it does not fact check the content of those ads.
