Twitter blocks accounts of Cuban state media, Castro

American social media giant Twitter Inc. has blocked the accounts of Cuban state media outlets, as well as that of the country's former President and current Communist Party Leader Raul Castro (pictured) and his daughter Mariela.

The Cuban Union of Journalists condemned the move, calling it "massive censorship" which aims to "limit the freedom of expression of Cuban institutions and citizens and to silence the leaders of the revolution." The ban came as Cuban state TV broadcast President Miguel Diaz Canel's speech on an energy crisis in the country for which he blamed the United States sanctions.

In August, Twitter announced it will no longer advertise "state-controlled news media entities" and noted it suspended over 900 accounts which allegedly played a part in China's "state-backed information campaign" to delegitimize the Hong Kong protests.
