UBS: 2020 election bigger risk than impeachment

The 2020 United States presidential election poses a bigger risk to the markets than the impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, UBS said in an investor note on Monday.

UBS Wealth Management stressed that because the Republicans have a Senate majority, removing Trump from office seems highly unlikely, which means markets have little reason to worry about impeachment-linked political uncertainty in the US.

However, top issues in the 2020 elections, like how to approach big tech or environmental policy, will play a pivotal role in investor confidence. Healthcare and pharmaceuticals could also be influenced by new policies, according to UBS, which could lead to greater market volatility.
