UK 'anxious' over India COVID variant - Johnson

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated on Thursday that the UK is "anxious" about the coronavirus variant first detected in India and that meetings will be organized later in the day to discuss the issue.

The prime minister cautioned that the variant is "spreading" and noted that the UK is "ruling nothing out." "At the moment I can see nothing that dissuades me from thinking we'll be able to go ahead on Monday and June 21 everywhere, but there may be things we have to do locally and we will not hesitate to do them if that is the advice we get," Johnson stated. "We want to make sure we take all the prudential, cautious steps now that we could take."

Earlier today, British Foreign Office Minister James Cleverly said that the India variant may delay the planned relaxation of lockdown measures in the UK. The UK is set to enter step three of its lockdown roadmap on May 17, with step four being planned for June 21.
