UK calls latest US measures against Cuba 'illegal'

United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Office stated on Thursday that it considers the latest United States' measures imposed against entities conducting business in Cuba illegal under international law. The statement underlines that the UK will cooperate with the European Union in protecting the companies now liable to litigation in US courts.

"The UK, like the EU, believes that the best way of encouraging Cuba to respect democratic freedoms and human rights, to implement political reform or to play a less unhelpful role in Venezuela is through dialogue and cooperation, not isolation," the press release concluded.

White House yesterday announced it will start implementing Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, which permits lawsuits against foreign firms operating on properties seized from the American citizens after the Cuban revolution. The latest measures against the regime in Havana was slammed by the EU, Canada, and Russia.
