UK COVID threat level to be raised to 5 - report

The United Kingdom government coronavirus alert level will be raised from four to highest-possible five, BBC's Nick Eardley reported on Monday, citing unnamed sources.

The reporter pointed out that the coronavirus alert levels are unrelated to the tiered system of restrictive measures in the country. According to the government's guidance, level five means that there is a "material risk of healthcare services being overwhelmed" and that the authorities will be able to impose stricter social distancing measures than the ones currently in place.

Meanwhile, multiple UK media reported that Prime Minister Boris Johnson will address the nation in the evening and that he is expected to announce a new nationwide lockdown.
