UK, EU said to agreed on N. Ireland goods transfer
British and European negotiators have allegedly achieved a major breakthrough when it comes to customs checks on goods moving between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.
An unnamed official from the European Union told the Guardian on Monday that a deal on animal health and food checks was nearly done. Under the latest deal, goods meant for Northern Ireland would go through a so-called "green lane" which will face lighter checks, while a stricter "red lane" would be used for goods that travel to the EU.
The EU and the UK would continue jointly following real-time data after the last month's agreement. However, while the reported deal is considered a breakthrough to the wider Northern Ireland protocol, the paper concluded that the issue of the European Court of Justice's role in international disputes still remains a challenge.
