UK expects EU to honor jab export commitments

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's spokesman stressed on Friday the United Kingdom expected the European Union to respect its commitments concerning restrictions on exports of vaccines against COVID-19.

"The global recovery from COVID relies on international collaboration. We are all dependent on global supply chains – putting in place restrictions endangers global efforts to fight the virus," he said. "The PM [Prime Minister] did speak to [European Commission] President [Ursula] von der Leyen earlier this year, and she confirmed that the focus of their mechanism was on transparency and not intended to restrict export by companies."

Number 10's remarks come after Italy blocked its exports of AstraZeneca PLC and Oxford University's jab to avoid further shortages in doses. Earlier, the UK extend a grace period for some checks on goods going to Northern Ireland, triggering the EU's criticism and threats of potential penalties.
