UK official doubts there will be Brexit deal next week - report

An unnamed official in the government of the United Kingdom said on Thursday that it is not likely that a new Brexit deal will be reached next week, by the time for the second vote that would avoid an unregulated departure from the European Union.

The Irish backstop remains the pressing issue and negotiators are still a long way from getting concessions they want from Brussels, the official told Bloomberg.

Earlier in the day, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker expressed pessimism in regards to Britain's departure from the EU, and stressed there would be "terrible consequences" on both sides if a Brexit deal is not approved in London.
