UK proposes adding Irish Sea food checks - report

The British government has proposed introducing new border checks on food products from the Irish Sea which could go into effect from October, according to the BBC's report published on Monday.

The news channel claimed that the proposal, also shared with the European Union, is part of the roadmap set out in the Northern Ireland Protocol. Furthermore, it argued that the plan could have significant consequences on implementing the post-Brexit trade deal, particularly the British scheme regarding sending supermarket goods from the UK to Northern Ireland.

If the UK proceeds with the notion, it could result in another extension of the period before London begins fully complying with EU laws, the report concluded.
