UK pursues first post-Brexit deal with Japan - report

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson seeks the "EU Plus Plus" trade deal with Japan by the end of 2020, ahead of reaching a potential trade agreement with the European Union, a source from Westminster told the Sun on Thursday. Cabinet ministers reportedly plan to push the deal through at "lightning speed," hoping that it will be finalized in the autumn.

"The PM is very keen on the Japan deal now, and think we can use it as a bit of a trailblazer. It will really help to show Brussels as well as the rest of the world we’re ready to go," a senior Whitehall official stressed, adding that the deal will have digital and financial services sectors in focus.

Earlier today, Queen Elizabeth II approved the Withdrawal Agreement Act, confirming the country's departure from the bloc on January 31. Starting February 1, London will be allowed to arrange trade agreements independently from the EU.
