UK retail sales annually surge 42.4% in April

Retail sales volumes in the United Kingdom annually soared better-than-expected 42.4% in April, according to the report published by the Office for National Statistics on Friday. On a monthly basis, retail sales grew 9.2%.

The figures reflect the effect of the easing of coronavirus-related restriction measures including the reopening of all non-essential retail in the UK that took place throughout April. Sales volumes grew 10.6% compared to the pre-crisis level, the report concluded.

With physical stores reopening over the course of the previous month, the total proportion of online sales declined by 4.7 percentage points to 30%.
